Firstly go to your local music shop, and ask the assistants - when its not busy- to help you chose out books. It will be quite hard and will take a lot of perseverance to learn piano from scratch. Alternatively, you could go to a piano teacher, eeven just for a few lessons, until you know how to read music or the basics of playing.

Good luck :)

You can start with learning a little more about the piano: the notes, staff, keys and other things. Most music stores will sell things for the piano. After you learn that stuff, you need to learn to read the music and not look at the keys. Start by studying the music. You can start with old songs everybody knows. It takes time, so don't give up and keep trying. Who knows? Maybe you will learn Mozart or Beethoven!

I know some people who can play La Campanella and Liszts Transcendental Etudes in less than a year of playing

Its very good. To polish and improve more than what you have done for a short time,

take that chance to find a piano teacher( well depends what city, state and country you are now)

or go to nysmf.org this organization of NYSMF (New York Summer Music Festival) in NY do accept non-musicians too. There is theatre in case if your also interested or anyone you know of.

I've met incredible famous pianist: Emi Kagawa, Ayako Tsuruta, Peter Miyamoto.

Ayako and Peter are on facebook, you can interview them on chat and Emi has myspace.
they also have their own official website I believe.

Or, you can go for: ( I wouldn't prefer, but for you can be a good choice; they don't have anycourse than piano and lil' bit of everything.. so not good)

Rhapsody Academy of Music
          630 Floral Ave
          Elizabeth, NJ 07208 Phone# 908-353-0291
www.rhapsodyacademy.com

teachers@rhapsodyacademy.com

But, it is best go to NYSMF or a pre-college program at Julliard I believe from starting 9th-12th grade.
I'm not sure you can find out more on their site or contact them by email or phone.

It can be done, though I would assume with no lessons you are not using proper techniques and the music might be kind of sloppy.

The thing you need to remember is rhythm, tempo (keep a steady tempo), tone, dynamics, correct fingerings, etc
You need to make sure those are correct or you are actually not considered to be good and are still a beginner.

But, if that is all good, then you are learning piano very quickly, but its piano, it is not the most difficult instrumnet

Why not? If you practice as hard as you play then its highly possible.. The reason why people play for 10 years and still suck, is they dont put that extra effort and time into playing.. Nuno bettoncourt dropped out of school to master he's technique.. he was practicing 10++ hours a day..

Depending on what style you want to play, it can be a good thing to learn on your own. If you are going for concert/classical type songs, I would get a teacher. If you can't get a teach and still want to go this route, buy a couple of basic instructional books and slowly learn how to read music. It can't be that tough, there are so many internet instructional videos and such that you can search for. But if you want to play pop songs and sing or play in a band doing it yourself can be a really good thing. (think elton john type songs or really any type of band) I've played in numerous bands, and the keyboard players that were self taught, just by learning scales and chords by ear, always got the flow of the music more naturally, whereas the trained players felt out of place with other musicians and asked me for sheet music, because they didn't know what to do. Obviously, this is not always the case, and lessons definitely have value, but my cousin hasn't had any lessons , and he always impresses with his improvisation and general style. If you do get lessons, be sure to just jam out with friends once and a while, and don't just play the one song your teacher gives you to learn every week. It is important to experiment with what just comes to you.

Yes. I learned on my own. you should get some chord books, and simple music to start out with, then move on to some harder music. Also, my keyboard has a setting that showed me what notes were playing on the staff, as well as on the keyboard, so i knew if i was right on the notes. :)
